Northern Light

One of my dreams and wishes is seeing and enjoying the Nothern Light in Scandinavia. About 2 years ago, my parents went on a cruise, sailing through whole Scandinavia, the Lofoten and Lapland. They saw the Nothern Light.. and I'm so jealous! Unfortunately, they couldn't take a picture from it. I've been to Scandinavia several times, Also in Lapland and the beautiful Lofoten islands. I also went to the North Cape with my parents. There I saw the midnight sun. It was an incredible experience and I would experience it again if I could have the chance.

So, Northern Light is one of my wishes. Soon will follow more of my wishes :)

Last few days it's been very stormy here in Holland. Code Orange: that is a weather alarm in Holland which tells you it's very stormy and dangerous outside and that trees may break. In the North of Holland, Groningen, the dikes are almost breaking!

If you don't know much about the Netherlands, well here's a small introduction of the geography and history of the Netherlands for my non-dutch readers:

Just after 1500 after Christ, Holland was nothing but a big swamp. Then the Dutch people wanted to grow food on the land, but the earth was to humid. So they dug small ditches, so the water would fload in there and the earth would become more dry, dry enough to grow food. Then, to pump more water out of the ground, they build windmills to keep the low lying parts dry for habitation and agriculture.

This means that the biggest parts of Holland are below sea level. They build dikes to prevend Holland from floading disasters. Unfortunately there have been a lot of disasters with broken dikes and stuff, the last disaster was in 1953, the North Sea Flood. There's also a movie about this disaster called "de Storm" which simply means "the storm".

So in 1976 the new Oosterscheldedam of the Delta works was finished to prevend more floods like the one in 1953.

They also build a big dike int the North of Holland: the Afsluitdijk, which means closing dike. It closes the Zuiderzee (south sea). Because of this dike there is almost no sea water in the Zuidersea and it becomes a lake: Ijsselmeer (Ijssellake), it's now a mix between sweet and salt water in the lake.

In this last map you see something weird: there is more land then in the map of after 1500. The mighty Dutch just created a new province out of WATER?!? Yes my dear children, yes. Flevoland is the name of this funny piece of land: an artificial island joined to the mainland by bridges.

Besides, did you know that Amsterdam is just a city, build on wooden poles, above a swomp?

Conclusion: Most parts of Holland are below sealevel and the whole coast is surrounded by dams and dikes. Also all rivers an canals are surrounded by dikes.

Look at what Holland would be without all this shit:

SOOOOOOOOO, my point is, that it's pretty serious here, lots of people are evacuated and stuff. Luckely I live in the south east of Holland, high above sea level yay.

Now, about the stormy weather here and now, the wind is blowing 100km/h. That's pretty dangerous.

But in august 2011 I was involved in the Pukkelpop festival disaster.

A storm blew over the festival property, and the heart of the storm (60 meters broad) was travelling exactly across the festival. This wind was 120km/h and there were hailstones smashed into our necks as big as strawberries. All festivaltents were broken, stage monitors were waving dangerously. There were 65.000 people at the festival, 140 injured people, 5 dead. It was an indescribable chaos. Me and my friends were unharmed, but when we were walking back to the campside and see if our tents were still alive, we saw lots of people crying, people who were waiting for their friends to come back from te festivalfield and hoping they were okay. People running through the mud falling in eachothers arms. I saw people with big red dots on their naked back-skin from hailstones (the whole day it had been about 35 degrees, so most of the guys walked around with bare upperbodies). I saw big festival tents, big as circustents, totally collapsed. I saw small tents on the campside, totally flooded and collapsed.

So, were was I during the moment of the storm? I was in a big festival tent with my boyfriend and 6 friends. We saw the dark weather coming, so we stayed under the tent. But what we did not know was that it would be storming, hailstones and lots of rain and lightning and thunder. We did not hear the thunder because the music was so loud. We did not notice the lightning because there were a lot of flashing stagelights. When people started pushing to get in the tent we noticed it. The next moment (standing in the middle under the canvas) we were totally soaked, just in a few seconds (i thought, this is impossible!). Then people started screaming, the beat of the music was still drumming. Then I felt it, big hailstones smashing against my head and in my neck. I took my bag and put it above my head, I sat on my haunches and waited. My friends were bent upon us girls to protect us, their caps on their necks to protect.

Suddenly, the boys started screaming to me: GET UP GET UP! RUN RUN!!! And I did, because all the hundreds of people in the tent started running to get out of the tent. While getting out of the tent, the 8 of us tried to stay together and held eachotcher by the hand or shoulder. When we were outside, we looked around (because there was no way we could stay outside, the hailstones were to big) and saw a Coca Cola tent, the people who worked there were just closing the canvas and lifting some of the last people over the bar inside. We hided in the Coca Cola tent and we were standing there with like 50 people between the little Coke bottles. The first thing one of my friends said "Does someone have dry cigarettes?" Everybody laughed. Then, in all the panic, I called my mom (the storm was not over yet) and I told her that there is a storm going on, we are all okay and that my tent was probably totally wet inside. And I told her to put on the Belgium television. We stayed in the cola tent till the storm was over.

I found this on youtube, a video that someone made while standing under the canvas (where I was with my friends too) during the storm, you see the storm outside, the people partying, then slowly collapsing of the tent, the chaos.

When we came outside again the ground was soaked, we were walking through water, which reached till our ankles, back to the exit of the festivalfield, crossing the road, through the mud (reaching our calves) to the campside. Luckily, our tent was still standing and not all our stuff was wet.

It was the first day of the 3day festival and we arrived the day before, we hadn't seen any big performances yet, the rest of the festival was canceled.

People living nearby the festival offered sleepplaces for festival-goers without tents or ruined tents. It was impossible to leave the the campside that night, because 65.000 people want to go home at the same time. So we and a few friends stayed for the night. That night, we saw people looting tents, some of them stealing tents. Because many people left without tent, and lots of tents were ruined. The next day we went home with brown legs from the mud and pieces of mud between our toes. Then we saw the videos of what exactly happened the evening before:

I don't blame the Pukkelpop organisation for this disaster, there was no way they could have foreseen how big this storm was.We did not get our money back. But Pukkelpop gave us lots of food and drink tickets for Pukkelpop edition 2012, 2013 and 2014.

So after this long story about water, hailstones, storms and dikes... I just wanna say... Nature is strong, you cannot do anything against it. Karma: if human kind is not good for mother nature, mother nature is getting angry after a while.

Vogue goes Swan Lake

Vogue Russia was inspired by the new cinema hit Black Swan. Suddenly, ballet is hot, and especially Swan Lake. Ofcourse, the movie Black Swan is totally-amazingly-super-duper-awesome!! I do ballet-dancing since i was 4 years old. Now I'm dancing at a Dance-Academy in Holland. I have ballet-classes every morning from 10.30 till 12.00. It's heavy shit.... I think that teen-age girls will run balletschools' doors out of their frames because of this movie. First: Ballet is stupid.. I'm not gonna fly around like a dying swan! And suddenly: AAAAAH I wanna learn to do ballet! I wanna dance on points! I wanna dance in a tutu!!
